Position Overview

The Forensic Nurse Specialist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols while aligning with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

The Forensic Nurse Specialist is a licensed professional nurse who delivers exceptional, trauma-informed medical forensic care to individuals presenting with concerns of sexual assault. These services are provided in a timely, compassionate, and non-judgmental manner, promoting patient autonomy and minimizing psychological distress. The medical forensic services may encompass a comprehensive forensic examination, evidence collection, counseling for emergency contraception, prophylactic treatment for sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals for necessary medical and psychological follow-up, as well as support during legal proceedings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates independently in accordance with professional standards as defined by relevant legislation and nursing practice guidelines, ensuring compliance with established protocols tailored to the patient demographic served.
  • Collaborates effectively with the interdisciplinary team, including the forensic nurse coordinator, healthcare providers, and therapeutic services, to ensure comprehensive care for survivors of sexual assault. Maintains high standards of documentation with accurate, timely, and complete records to ensure adherence to legal and ethical standards.
  • Safeguards the privacy of survivors and maintains the integrity of the evidence collected, including adherence to evidence collection protocols.
  • Stays informed on current regulatory and legislative developments related to the treatment and documentation standards for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Provides education to survivors and their families to address their emotional and healthcare needs, facilitating the recovery process.
  • Conducts work safely, following established safety protocols, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions or practices that may pose risks to oneself, colleagues, patients, or visitors.
  • May be required to provide testimony in court as a fact witness or expert, and assists fellow forensic nurses in preparing for legal proceedings.
  • Fosters a learning environment by sharing expertise with colleagues; participates in the orientation of new staff by providing relevant training on care for sexual assault survivors.
  • Engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes, increasing satisfaction, and improving the overall care provided to survivors.
  • Ensures ongoing professional development by engaging with current evidence-based practices and remaining updated on standards in forensic and nursing practice.
  • Completes required continuing education in medical and forensic nursing as mandated by current regulations.
  • Participates in the development and evaluation of regional and system-wide forensic nursing programs.
  • Attends regular meetings and engages in peer review processes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with a commitment to obtain a BSN from an accredited institution within a specified timeframe.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in good standing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
  • Completion of a recognized Clinical Training Program in forensic nursing within the first year of employment.
  • Completion of an approved didactic course in forensic nursing.
  • Fulfillment of the Clinical Training Log requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Adult/Adolescent Forensic Nurse or Pediatric/Adolescent Forensic Nurse.
  • Certification as a SANE-A or SANE-P.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or Trauma Nursing Specialist (TNS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
