Position Overview

The Mental Health Worker (MHW) plays a crucial role in supporting the Registered Nurse by delivering direct patient care and ensuring a secure therapeutic environment, adhering to established protocols and procedures. The MHW's actions consistently uphold the Therapeutic Milieu Model, while also managing clerical tasks to ensure the patient care unit operates smoothly.

Key Responsibilities of the Mental Health Worker:
  • Assist patients in fulfilling their physical needs and support them in daily living activities.
  • Gather clinical information for Registered Nurses to aid in evaluating the patient's mental and physical health.
  • Support the unit's admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  • Monitor patients and their environment, noting interactions and reporting any changes in mental status or behavior to the Registered Nurse.
  • Conduct safety rounds within the patient milieu and document patient locations.
  • Receive training and demonstrate proficiency in managing situations where a patient may be out of control or displaying inappropriate behavior, including the use of verbal and behavioral interventions as necessary.
  • Facilitate group interactions and activities for patients, utilizing available resources effectively.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient responses to interventions and milieu activities in the correct format.
  • Transcribe physician orders accurately, completing all necessary documentation to implement orders, including recognizing and using hospital codes as required.
  • Ensure diagnostic and laboratory reports are filed correctly in the appropriate patient charts after review by medical staff.
Qualifications & Education:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • CPR certification is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of Crisis Intervention training is required.
Experience Requirements:
  • Preferred one year of experience in Mental Health or a related field.
  • Computer proficiency is preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital setting is advantageous.
