Job Summary:

The Nursing Unit Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of nursing personnel in patient care units. This includes participating in planning work, coordinating activities with other patient care units and related departments, and ensuring that patients' needs are met. The successful candidate will have extensive experience and judgment to accomplish responsibilities, creativity to perform job duties, and leadership skills to direct the work of others.

Responsibilities:
  1. Leadership and Supervision:
    1. Assist in the effective hiring and training process for department staff
    2. Assign and monitor staff work and work schedules according to department policy
    3. Maintain appropriate data on employee attendance for payroll/ATM
    4. Maintain appropriate data on employee performance for counseling and performance review
    5. Address employee behavioral issues timely and effectively
    6. Demonstrate ability to coach and mentor staff
    7. Participate in or complete performance review process in a timely and effective manner
    8. Facilitate patient throughput in the admission/discharge/transfer process
    9. Serve as a clinical resource to staff
    10. Coordinate and communicate critical information related to risk issues, guest service issues, or other need-to-know information with administration, risk management, medical management, medical staff, and patient advocates
  2. Clinical Practice and Care Management:
    1. Perform psychosocial/physiologic assessments that integrate changing data
    2. Formulate a plan of care based on trends of similar patients, including patient education and discharge planning. Tailor and prioritize caring practice to individual needs, including cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs
    3. Participate in the planning of routine transitional healthcare needs (i.e., treatment options, patient placement options, end-of-life options)
    4. Respond to changes in patient needs and provide holistic care using independent clinical judgment based on knowledge drawn from education and experience
    5. Adapt planned educational programs and information to individual patients and families by modifying teaching strategies or content. Integrate education during the delivery of patient care. Collaborate with patients/families to identify realistic desired outcomes
    6. Ensure efficiency in the delivery of care: determine immediate priorities and offer solutions for problems
    7. Actively advocate for patient rights and identify potential conflict. Seek counsel for resolution of conflict
    8. Identify variances from expected outcomes
    9. Evaluate patient outcomes and make revisions in the plan of care
    10. Document all patient care activities as per documentation standards. Assist the healthcare team with the documentation process
  3. Communication and Collaboration:
    1. Consistently communicate/collaborate with the healthcare team members, patients, and families to maximize patient outcomes
    2. Appropriately delegate patient care activities to other healthcare team members and participate in making and revising staff assignments to achieve maximum productivity
    3. Maintain knowledge regarding unit initiatives and incorporate the outcomes of the team/committees' work into practice
    4. Participate on unit teams, work groups, and/or committees. Anticipate needs and voluntarily assist others
  4. Quality:
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of unit-based quality improvement initiatives
    2. Ensure quality improvement initiatives are followed by utilizing standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery
    3. Incorporate evidence-based practice and research findings into nursing practice to enhance outcomes
  5. Professional Development:
    1. Act as a clinical resource and serve as a mentor to healthcare team members; display leadership behaviors
    2. Identify own learning needs based on self-evaluation and the progress made from the previous year's goals
    3. Accountable for all documentation and completion of all required continuing education and competencies relevant to the area of practice as defined by clinical management
    4. Ensure improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in lifelong learning
    5. Provide direction and guidance to others regarding practice, serve as a resource, preceptor, and mentor. Leadership skills in critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving
