Job Summary

Bell International Laboratories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research and Development Chemist to join our team. As a key member of our research and development department, you will be responsible for formulating and developing new personal care products, cosmetics, and OTC products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Development: Initiate project concepts, develop objectives, plan and assign priorities, and complete multiple projects under minimal supervision.
  • Research and Development: Independently investigate and resolve research problems and scale-up issues.
  • Customer Communication: Communicate with customers on technical aspects, regulatory requirements, and product performance.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Utilize and follow relevant legal requirements, regulations, and product development standards.
  • Cost Reduction: Determine and perform appropriate cost reductions (raw materials).
  • Scale-up and Troubleshooting: Scale-up of approved formulations, including identification of critical process variables, and troubleshoot production issues and address batch variations.
  • Product Specifications: Set product specifications and write compounding procedures.
  • Pilot Batches: Supervise and coordinate pilot batches.
  • Documentation: Provide paperwork for new formulas and new raw materials to operations.
  • Quality Control: Provide specifications and other information to QC to receive and test new ingredients and finished goods.
  • Research and Development: Research product formulations and properties and interactions of raw materials.
  • Vendor Research: Vendor research for raw materials.
  • Ingredient Lists: Compose and check ingredient lists, QQs, and artwork.
  • Lab Findings: Interpret results of laboratory findings and assess risks involved in new products and communicate findings to sales and upper management.
  • Market Trends: Remain up to date and current on trends in the retail market and trends on formulations materials, ingredients, etc.
  • Training and Mentoring: Training, mentoring, and supervising lab staff (permanent and temporary).
Requirements
  • Advanced Formulation Skills: Advanced formulation skills and technical knowledge.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Thorough understanding of FDA regulations and cGMP's.
  • Strategic Recommendations: Drives creative research and strategic recommendations for product development.
  • Consumer Insights: Able to translate consumer insights into actionable recommendations to achieve exceptional consumer satisfaction.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects, in a fast-paced environment under short deadlines, tolerance for business ambiguity; the ability to thrive under quickly changing situations; adaptable, with ability to meet short turnaround times.
  • Methodological Mindset: Methodological mindset to test new ideas and work towards valid results.
  • Supplier Management: Proven ability to manage external suppliers and ensure top value and performance for the organization.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Education and Experience
  • Education: BS in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related sciences with 8+ years of formulating personal care products.
  • Experience: -OR- advanced degree in cosmetic chemistry and more than 6 years' experience.
