Job Summary

We are seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to join our team at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). As a trainee, you will participate in a structured on-the-job training program to learn and employ analytical, preventative maintenance, and repair duties for construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in a progressive on-the-job training program to learn and employ analytical, preventative maintenance, and repair duties for construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles.
  • Work under the guidance of supervisors, managers, and other staff to develop skills and knowledge in diesel and construction equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles, including oil changes, tire rotations, and brake repairs.
  • Assist in the diagnosis and repair of complex mechanical issues with construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of safety procedures and protocols for working with heavy equipment and vehicles.
Requirements
  • Two years of experience as a Tradesman Helper working in the automotive field, or graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • Ability to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Ability to operate vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with 30-minute lunch breaks. Travel, overtime, and shift work are required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
