Job Title: GED Instructor

Join the City of Hampton, VA team as a GED Instructor and make a difference in the lives of inmates by providing academic support and guidance.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified GED Instructor to teach inmates in various academic subjects, including writing, math, reading, social studies, and science. The successful candidate will have a strong background in education, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with inmates from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement lesson plans to help inmates prepare for the GED examination
  • Teach and focus on the five areas inmates are tested on, including writing, math, reading, social studies, and science
  • Help inmates improve their information processing and communication skills
  • Provide effective teaching methods to help inmates achieve their GED
  • Teach critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Evaluate inmates to determine readiness for testing in all content areas
  • Administer pre-test and post-test TABE for inmates as needed
  • Test students' abilities both formally and informally throughout sessions
  • Use inmate assessments in program planning
  • Design classes based on the learning needs of the inmates
  • Schedule GED testing for inmates who have been prepared for testing
  • Ensure that inmates receive their GED Certificates within a designated time frame
  • Maintain communications with supervisor about class activities and progress
  • Maintain inmate attendance forms and relay this information to the programs coordinator
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of GED laws, rules, regulations, and policies governing education and teaching
  • Ability to work with inmates from different cultures, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds
  • Ability to motivate and communicate effectively
  • Experience teaching Adult Basic Education
  • Ability to work in a correctional environment and adhere to all HSO rules, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding inmates
  • Ability to remain current with instructional methodologies and counseling techniques, appropriate testing procedures, and interpretation of specific tests
  • Maintains relationships with local school systems
  • Ability to plan and schedule classes effectively
  • Ability to work evenings
  • Ability to work with males and females
  • Ability to work in a confined facility
  • Acts rationally and calm under stressful situations
  • Utilizes good public relations skills
  • Uses good leadership skills
  • Protects confidential information by preventing unauthorized release, both verbal and/or writing
  • Prioritizes tasks
  • Properly operates authorized city vehicles and equipment
  • Understands legal rights of inmates, maintains inmates' safety and security
  • Makes sound decisions
  • Executes other responsibilities as relevant to this position
Education and Experience:

Must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Must have previous teaching experience (Teaching certification preferred in Elementary, Secondary, or Adult Education). Must maintain professional development courses to keep up with new or current teaching requirements and enhance skills.

Performance Standard:

Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.

Environmental Hazards:

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

Physical and Dexterity Requirements:

Must have the capability to hear, speak, and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue, and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run, bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; move/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs. Requires operation standard office equipment.

Additional Requirements:
