Job Title: Phlebotomist I

Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist I is a vital member of our healthcare team, responsible for collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. This role requires a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collect patient specimens through venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick procedures, adhering to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens and containers accurately.
  • Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, and other specimen collections.
  • Process, prepare, centrifuge, aliquot, and route specimens to the laboratory, including reference lab.
  • File patient lab reports, requisition charges for the business office, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics.
  • Post charges and reconcile invoices, investigating complex bills as needed.
  • Enter patient demographic data accurately and maintain required lab records and logs.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, recording daily temperatures of refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.
  • Order supplies and maintain sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomy services.
  • Assist in the training of new associates and students, and act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.
  • Perform patient registration and test ordering and specimen processing as appropriate.
  • Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately, utilizing equipment according to departmental guidelines.
  • Maintain a neat and clean work area, disposing of waste appropriately and cleaning bench areas and equipment.
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abide by service behavior standards.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification from one of the following organizations required: RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician), AMT PBT (Phlebotomy Technician), ASCP American Sociaety of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Association of Phlebotomy Technicians (NAPT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Nationa Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Healthcare Certification Association.
  • Preferred: Six (6) months of laboratory experience.

Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information, as well as understand spoken information.

Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents.

Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart.

Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work.

Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
