Job Summary

The City of Montclair is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Official to join our team. As a key member of our Community Development Department, you will be responsible for ensuring that all buildings and structures within the city meet the minimum standards adopted by the City Council and the State.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer the activities of the Building Division, supervising the work of Building Inspectors and Senior Building Inspectors.
  • Review and approve building plans, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Enforce all applicable codes and ordinances related to building construction and safety.
  • Train and mentor Building Inspectors in proper inspection methods and procedures.
  • Coordinate with other departments, such as Engineering and Planning, to ensure compliance with city regulations.
  • Represent the City in building code groups and development review meetings.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Director and City Council on building regulations and code enforcement.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience in building inspection or a related field.
  • Possession of I.C.B.O./I.C.C. Combination Inspector and Building Plans Examiner certifications.
  • Certification as a Building Official by the International Code Council.
Working Conditions

The Building Official will work in a standard office setting, with occasional visits to construction sites and other city locations. The position requires mobility, vision, and hearing to perform duties.
