Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team at the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The successful candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and experience in conducting research in a laboratory setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct research in molecular cloning, including the development of new protocols and techniques.
  • Lead the Illumina linkering and library preparation for all genomics samples in the Cremins laboratory.
  • Conduct and lead the kappa quantification, pooling, and sequencing runs for the lab.
  • Serve as the laboratory's safety officer and ensure compliance with all safety protocols.
  • Lead the assessment and assembly of quotes for fixing and maintenance of technical equipment.
  • Maintain an orderly lab notebook, record, interpret, and analyze data within prescribed methods.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Carefully curate lab notebooks with detailed record-keeping.
  • Lead the laboratory in maintaining and organizing laboratory LIMS for -20C, -80C, liquid N2, plasmids, and cold room records.
  • Lead the placing of orders and receiving of orders, and maintaining a clean laboratory with all items placed in their proper place.
  • Schedule weekly All Hands on Deck lab cleaning endeavors.
  • Serves as the first or second point of contact for all freezer alarms.

Scientific Writing

  • Organize, edit, and catalyze the writeup and creation of lab protocols.
  • Teach and train the laboratory on the lab notebook style and maintain outstanding spreadsheets and records.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Become an expert in running each piece of equipment in the lab.
  • Train new lab members on cloning and sequencing protocols.
  • Write SOPs and protocols for areas under expertise.
  • Actively involved in establishing and maintaining an orderly, annotated, clean, and organized laboratory with all reagents and boxes in defined location.

Qualifications

A Master's degree in molecular and cell biology or related field with 3-5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to troubleshoot and solve cellular and genome engineering challenges independently and flexibility and independence to take on new/additional technical tasks that may arise during the discovery process will be important. PhD applicants will be given preference.

Exceptional commitment to building community, belonging, and a collaborative ethos within the laboratory and with the members of other laboratories in Penn Genetics, Epigenetics, and Neuroscience communities.

Established track record of working with a dedication to open transparent communication.

Demonstrated ability to handle daily laboratory challenges with a dedication to the values of reconciliation, unity, mutual honor, and respect.

Must be able to develop excellent wet lab protocols and train/onboard new students and postdocs to educate others in standard lab operating procedures.
