Key Responsibilities
  1. Welcome and engage with library patrons, initiating conversations about available resources and services. Deliver outstanding customer service at service points and throughout the library.
  2. Communicate effectively with patrons on various topics, including library offerings, policies, and expectations. Utilize creativity and problem-solving skills to enhance the customer experience and address any concerns.
  3. Assess patron needs through open-ended inquiries, tailoring responses to provide appropriate recommendations and solutions for both simple and complex requests.
  4. Manage the check-out, check-in, and renewal processes for all library materials, including unique items such as electronics and tools.
  5. Oversee library spaces, ensuring safety and assisting patrons as needed, while maintaining security protocols.
  6. Maintain an accurate customer database, ensuring privacy and confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws.
  7. Organize library materials according to established classification systems, ensuring easy access for patrons.
  8. Regularly tidy and maintain library spaces, including gathering items, organizing shelves, and performing cleaning tasks.
  9. Assist in locating and processing items that are reported as misplaced.
  10. Handle items designated for removal from the collection.
  11. Exhibit strong time management and organizational skills, effectively balancing multiple tasks.
  12. Support library programs and outreach initiatives, assisting with event preparation and execution.
  13. Guide new staff members in acclimating to the library environment and culture.
  14. Stay updated on new technologies and complete required training.
  15. Participate in special projects as assigned.
  16. Represent the department on various library committees as needed.
  17. Take responsibility for minor maintenance and troubleshooting within the library.
  18. Perform additional duties as required.
Circulation Responsibilities
  1. Conduct financial transactions accurately using various payment methods.
  2. Notify patrons regarding damaged or missing items and manage related customer accounts.
  3. Assist patrons in locating items on hold and provide support in navigating the library.
  4. Operate the automated sorting system in the sorting room, adhering to safety protocols.
  5. Sort and transfer returned items to appropriate locations, checking for damages and necessary repairs.
Adult and Youth Services Responsibilities
  1. Contribute to the development and upkeep of departmental displays.
  2. Assist in collection maintenance by searching for and organizing materials.
  3. Create bibliographies to highlight library collections and support reader advisory.
  4. Help with program setup and cleanup, including preparing materials and organizing supplies.
  5. Support programs by assisting patrons and managing crowd control.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED, with relevant training in customer service or clerical work.
  2. Ability to work with automated systems.
  3. Intermediate computer skills and the ability to learn library software.
  4. Basic math and library skills.
Additional Skills and Abilities
  1. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  2. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  3. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  4. Capability to learn and implement emergency procedures.
  5. Multilingual abilities are a plus.
  6. For positions involving youth services, a passion for working with children is essential.
  7. Must provide a personal cell phone for security purposes.
Work Environment
  1. Ability to work in a moderately noisy environment typical of public libraries.
  2. Occasional proximity to mechanical equipment.
