As a key member of our birth defects surveillance program, you will be responsible for conducting active surveillance of birth defects, identifying cases through case finding and medical record review, and abstracting complex medical information from medical records.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct active surveillance of birth defects, identifying cases through case finding and medical record review.
  • Abstract complex medical information from medical records, including diagnoses, procedures, and histories.
  • Analyze data from multiple sources, including medical records, to develop a complete picture of each birth defect.
  • Code each birth defect using the program's detailed coding system.
  • Enter and edit data in multiple computer databases.
  • Review and analyze own work to identify and eliminate errors and inconsistencies.
  • Serve as a liaison between the program and healthcare facilities, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Participate in program and regional teams to improve processes and procedures.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, human physiology, obstetrics, and neonatology.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex medical information from medical records.
  • Ability to accurately and completely collect data from medical records, including diagnoses, procedures, and histories.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperation from healthcare facilities to ensure complete case-finding, record review, and abstraction.
  • Ability to produce accurate and complete work through review, identification, and correction of errors.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and organize schedules optimally to balance field and office work.
Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent travel to healthcare facilities, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare facilities and program staff.
