POSITION TITLE: Head Coach

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possesses a valid Kentucky teaching certificate; or
  • Holds a valid Emergency Certificate for Substitute Teaching as outlined in 16 KAR 2:120 Sec b); or
  • Earned a Bachelor's degree or higher; or
  • Completed a minimum of 64 semester hours and is at least 21 years old; or
  • Has a high school diploma (or equivalent), is 21 years or older, and has completed all KHSAA Board of Control prescribed electives as per KHSAA Bylaw 25.
  • Current certification in C.P.R. including Adult and Child certifications, proficiency in using an Automatic External Defibrillator, and First Aid Training from an accredited program recognized by a college or university, the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other legitimate accrediting agency approved by KHSAA.
  • Successfully completed the Sports Safety Course as mandated by KRS.
  • Demonstrates prior coaching experience or shows substantial knowledge in the assigned sport.
  • Exhibits the ability to effectively engage with students.
  • Possesses strong communication skills with students, faculty, parents, and the community.

REPORTS TO: Principal

JOB OBJECTIVE: To guide each participating student in achieving a high level of skill, fostering an appreciation for discipline and sportsmanship, and enhancing self-esteem.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct individual participants in the essential skills required for excellence in the sport.
  • Collaborate with the athletic director (with principal's approval) to develop a comprehensive practice schedule for each season, including summer sessions and camps.
  • Assist the athletic director in organizing all interscholastic competitions for the sport.
  • Prepare proposals and recommend the procurement of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as necessary.
  • Maintain required attendance records, insurance documentation, and similar paperwork as directed by the athletic director.
  • Ensure the safety conditions of the facility or area where the sport is conducted at all times when students are present.
  • Uphold the established performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in the assigned sport.
  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanship at all times, establishing and overseeing penalties for breaches of these standards by individual students.
  • Develop an annual budget request for the sport in collaboration with the principal and athletic director, and manage the annual budget in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate all assistant coaches under supervision and provide recommendations to the principal and athletic director.
  • Participate in functions and activities as described in the standard teacher job description.
  • Oversee the proper maintenance and care of athletic equipment.
  • Maintain a record of practice schedules to document the teaching of proper skills and knowledge.
  • Submit purchase orders to the athletic director for review and approval.
  • Obtain prior approval from the principal for all fundraising activities.
  • Monitor and oversee all student fundraising activities related to the program.
  • Ensure all students are supervised by certified personnel at all times during approved after-school programs.
  • Perform additional duties consistent with the assigned position as requested by the supervisor.

Note: Summer practices and camps are applicable only to certain sports.
