Job Summary

The Special Education Teacher - Academic Support Specialist will play a critical role in building the foundation for student success at Great Hearts Academies. This position will collaborate with the Special Education Coordinator to deliver on all aspects of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, school leadership, and the Special Education team to ensure that the IEP process is implemented with fidelity, providing students with access to a rich, classical liberal arts education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Planning and Services
    • Facilitate IEP meetings to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs.
    • Draft and maintain IEP documentation in compliance with state and federal regulations.
    • Consult with school staff on the implementation of IEPs, accommodations, and modifications.
    • Provide support and training for special and general education faculty on strategies for learning and student support.
    • Partner with parents of students with disabilities to ensure effective IEP implementation.
    • Manage caseload and assignments to meet compliance timelines for IEP committee meetings and services.
    • Provide Specially Designed Instruction to students with IEPs, track progress, and report to parents.
  • Organizational Management
    • Assist with the organizational needs of the Special Education Department.
    • Collaborate on student data reporting for state and federal funding and compliance.
  • The Special Education Teacher's Role in Student Achievement
    • Work collaboratively with teachers and campus administrators to create a supportive school environment.
    • Support the creation and implementation of special education services on the school campus.
    • Provide assistance to teachers and school administrators in creating a school climate and culture that promotes student behavior and academic success.
    • Interpret student data to assist teachers with student growth and development.
    • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Professional Learning
    • Support the Special Education Coordinator in delivering staff development presentations on special education topics.
    • Attend in-service training to promote knowledge and skill growth.
    Qualifications and Competencies
    • Education
      • Master's Degree (preferred) or Bachelor's Degree with valid Louisiana Special Education Certification.
    • Experience
      • Minimum one year of successful Special Education teaching experience, preferably in Louisiana.
    • Special Skills
      • Ability to prepare individualized education programs (IEPs).
      • Knowledge of local, state, and federal rules and regulations pertaining to special education.
      • Knowledge of various special education eligibility conditions and challenges to learning.
      • Basic computer skills.
      • Strong organization and communication skills.
      • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, and parents.
      Additional Requirements
      • Employment is subject to passing a fingerprint criminal history check.
      • Physical functions: Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.
