Job Overview

Position Summary:

This role is primarily focused on delivering technical assistance to Optometrists, ensuring that Oyáte Health Center (OHC) patients receive top-notch optometric services. Additionally, the technician will support optician and administrative tasks as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patient interviews and document health histories along with relevant findings.
  • Assist optometrists by performing fundamental tests such as visual acuity, color vision, and intraocular pressure assessments.
  • Carry out specialized testing procedures upon the optometrist's request, including visual fields and fundus photography.
  • Maintain proper storage of pharmaceuticals, supplies, and instruments in compliance with professional standards.
  • Administer eye drops and other pharmacological agents as directed by the optometrist.
  • Provide both individual and group education to patients regarding optical health and refractive issues.
  • Verify spectacle prescriptions using appropriate instruments.
  • Manage phone inquiries, schedule appointments, and handle patient registration through electronic health records.
  • Prepare prescriptions and coordinate orders for eyewear from manufacturers.
  • Perform essential frame measurements to ensure optimal fit and function.
  • Conduct basic optical repairs on damaged frames.
  • Collaborate with other departments to coordinate eye care programs.
  • Train new staff members as needed.
  • Adhere to federal regulations, including HIPAA, to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Execute additional related duties as assigned.

Supervision:

The supervisor will provide general guidance and specific instructions for new or complex tasks. The employee is expected to work independently on routine assignments while seeking assistance for unfamiliar situations.

Work Environment:

This position requires the ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds and may involve exposure to various weather conditions. The work environment typically has a moderate noise level.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of relevant experience.
  • Commitment to ongoing education and certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Successful completion of background checks and drug screening is mandatory.
