Position Overview

The Cybersecurity Specialist plays a crucial role in overseeing, identifying, safeguarding, and sustaining the security of information, systems, and networks for the University of California, Riverside. This position is essential in ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of institutional data by implementing comprehensive security policies and configurations. The specialist is responsible for the operation and maintenance of security-centric information systems, supports the fortification of information systems, and enhances enterprise security methodologies. The role involves investigating, analyzing, and responding to immediate and potential security threats, employing mitigation, preparedness, and recovery strategies to ensure the protection of life, property, and information security. The specialist will conduct endpoint and network digital forensic investigations and facilitate the automation and orchestration of incident response efforts. Responsibilities may also include performing penetration testing and network scanning to identify and monitor assets and vulnerabilities throughout the systems lifecycle. The individual will act as a security systems administrator, which includes planning, configuring, designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining tools, systems, and procedures to guarantee the integrity, reliability, and security of data, systems, and networks. Maintaining service standards while collaborating with stakeholders to resolve security control issues is also a key aspect of this role.

Please note: The incumbent in this position will work on a hybrid schedule, with a minimum requirement of three days in the office and the option to work remotely for two days each week.

The full salary range for the Cybersecurity Specialist is $81,500 - $150,100 annually, with an expected pay scale of up to $115,800 annually. Salary offers are determined based on various factors, including education, licensure and certifications, experience, and organizational needs.

Applicants must possess current work authorization when accepting a position at UCR. Currently, the university is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a university employee, compliance with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements is required, as these may be amended periodically. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Educational Qualifications

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
License Requirements
  • Must possess or obtain a valid California Driver's License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, if driving a university or personal vehicle for university-related business. (Preferred)
Certification Requirements
  • Obtain and maintain expert-level security certification within six months of hire. (Required)
  • Information Security certification such as CEH, CASP+, CISSP, Azure Security, CCSP, etc. (Preferred)
  • System Admin certification such as M365, MCSE, RHCSA, CCNA, etc. (Preferred)
Experience Requirements
  • 4 - 7 years of relevant experience. (Required)
  • Experience managing security tools. (Required)
  • Experience in vulnerability scanning and/or penetration testing. (Preferred)
  • Experience supporting enterprise information systems. (Preferred)
  • Experience in security event triage, incident response, and/or digital forensics. (Preferred)
  • Relevant experience in the healthcare sector. (Preferred)
Core Competencies

Knowledge and experience in implementing IT Security frameworks, such as CIS Critical Security Controls, NIST rev 2, and/or NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Basic skills in reading and interpreting security logs. Understanding of other IT areas, departmental processes, and procedures. Demonstrated experience in selecting and applying appropriate data encryption technologies. Familiarity with computer hardware, software, and network security issues and solutions. Ability to adhere to departmental processes and procedures. Experience utilizing IT security systems and tools. Knowledge of data encryption techniques. Proficiency in analyzing logs for security breaches. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical personnel at various organizational levels. Proven ability to apply security controls to computer software and hardware. Demonstrated skill in administering complex security controls and configurations for computer hardware, software, and networks. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination, and analysis.
