General Overview:
Under general supervision, the Surgical Technician II provides essential technical support to operating room physicians and nursing staff during complex surgical procedures. This role requires a primary focus on a designated service line, with specific expertise and competencies related to that area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilizes physician preference cards to prepare the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Maintains and updates preference cards as necessary.
  • Ensures an adequate supply of instruments and materials to meet patient needs.
  • Prepares the sterile field by arranging instruments and supplies prior to procedures.
  • Assists in draping the patient and operative area, while preparing the sterile field.
  • Helps the nursing staff in identifying operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Stays attentive during surgeries, providing additional instruments and supplies as required.
  • Monitors the sterile field and addresses any breaches in sterile technique.
  • Delivers medications to the surgeon as needed.
  • Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as per policy.
  • Reports all drains, packs, and implants to the circulating nurse and assists with dressing applications.
  • Supports post-operative processing of instruments and equipment.
  • Cleans operating room areas and disposes of sharps in accordance with policy.
  • Collaborates with other departments and vendors to learn about new equipment and ensure updated tools and supplies.
  • If assigned to the Labor and Delivery unit, may perform various clerical and technical direct patient care activities.
Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of climbing, kneeling, and performing duties under stress. The role may involve lifting and carrying objects, as well as considerable walking, standing, pushing, and pulling. Candidates should be able to stand for up to 6 hours daily and possess excellent manual dexterity for handling instruments and equipment. Visual acuity is necessary for performing required tasks, with occasional requirements to push/pull up to 100 pounds and to move or position patients. Frequent exposure to needles, sharp objects, blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases is expected.

Experience:

A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of medical asepsis as it pertains to the operating room, various instruments used in surgical procedures, proper operating room setup, and correct handling of instruments and supplies is essential. Skills in maintaining effective working relationships, following technical instructions, and scrubbing for all specialty areas are necessary. The Surgical Technician II must demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to provide age-appropriate care for patients across the lifespan.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician program is required.

Licenses/Certifications:

Service line competency achievement and current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association are required upon hire.
