Experience: One year of experience in a surgical setting is preferred. Experience in a specialty field is also preferred. Basic computer skills are required.
License: Required by local regulatory agencies for surgical technologists.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
- Required
- Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBTSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- Required
Must-Have: Ability to provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and facility policy. Effective communication with surgeons and nursing staff is essential.
Job Description:
- Work under the supervision of the surgeon and RN
- Assist the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile setup of instruments, equipment, and supplies
- Use the physician preference card to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled procedures
- Update preference cards with any necessary changes
- Set up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures
- Prepare solutions and medications, label them, and report amounts used for charting
- Prepare back table and mayo stand, anticipating needs of the surgeon
- Provide supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist
- Assist with draping the sterile field; drape and cover operating and instrument tables
- Perform appropriate counts with circulator before the operation, before incision is closed, and as needed
- Deliver surgical specimens/cultures from operative field to circulating nurse
- Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures
- Prepare and sterilize supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures
- Review and replace supplies in the surgical case following a procedure and discard expired medications per protocol
- Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room and prepare it for the next patient
- Hold retractors or instruments, sponge or suction the operative site, apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cut suture material, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to a wound
- Anticipate possible problems or complications that could arise during a case and adjust quickly
- Perform all duties in a conscientious, courteous, and caring manner to maintain positive customer relations
- Maintain efficiency under stress and irregular working hours
- Adhere to department procedures and acceptable protocols
- Apply knowledge of dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviation to immediate supervisor
- Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities
- Participate in professional and program development by attending department inservices, meetings, and sharing professional expertise to enhance the quality of patient care and staff development
- Seek specialty service learning opportunities and growth for advancement, assisting with the education of new staff and students
- Demonstrate effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements
Float Requirements: Floating may be required to any location within sixty (60) miles or within a defined float zone. Float assignments may include duties outside of original job requirements (including skill sets).
