Job Summary
The University of California San Diego is seeking a highly skilled Cyberinfrastructure Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for managing the overall network cyberinfrastructure that supports research and public safety end-users of the High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN).
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee management of network segments and firewalls in use on each mountain-top hub site.
- Directly manage the network space in the data centers that host the servers for the network.
- Perform in-depth analyses and implement solutions for highly complex issues in technical areas such as network management platforms, enterprise network switches and routers, and server and network log aggregation and analysis platforms.
- Implement secure configurations to minimize trust relationships between network segments.
Requirements
- Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
- Demonstrated ability to install network infrastructure hardware, replace parts, diagnose faults, and work with sales and service personnel.
- Experience with vendor relations and the evaluation, selection, and purchasing of hardware and software.
- Demonstrated knowledge of IP-based networking, switch, router, and firewall management, and layer-2 and layer-3 VPN tunneling.
- Advanced knowledge of network troubleshooting tools and network activity monitoring tools.
- General knowledge of other areas of IT and thorough understanding of systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies, including securing server-based software and common intrusion detection and prevention tools.
- Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
- Experience with VMware and other virtualization hypervisors, SAN/NAS technology, and HA configurations.
- Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Working Conditions
The Wide-area Wireless Network Administrator primarily works from La Jolla, but will occasionally need to work irregular hours to resolve critical operations issues or assist with deployment of equipment at tower and customer sites.
