Position Overview

Weill Cornell Medicine's Neurological Surgery department caters to a diverse patient population with a wide array of neurological conditions, including but not limited to brain and spinal tumors, strokes, aneurysms, epilepsy, and movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. We are seeking a dedicated Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to join our Chiari Program.

In collaboration with a supervising physician, the FNP will oversee the coordination and direct management of patient care within designated specialty areas and clinical protocols. This role also encompasses patient education responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Assess patient needs, establish nursing care priorities, and develop tailored care plans.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary healthcare services and coordinate necessary diagnostic tests as per physician orders.
  • Manage patient inquiries and communicate test results effectively.
  • Administer prescribed medications and injections in accordance with state regulations and clinic protocols, while educating patients on pharmacological effects.
  • Document relevant medical information accurately in electronic health records.
  • Engage with referring physicians to enhance referral processes.
  • Handle precertification and preauthorization for prescriptions as required.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and assist in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control standards and quality assurance in patient care.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment, ensuring accurate order fulfillment.
  • Attend professional development workshops and seminars to stay updated on best practices.
  • Evaluate patient eligibility for clinical studies and review medical histories for study inclusion.
  • Manage care protocols for selected patients, including medication prescriptions and adjustments.
  • For surgical cases, ensure all pre-operative requirements are met and review discharge summaries for accuracy.

Educational Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Nursing.

Experience Requirements

A minimum of 2 years of clinical experience as an FNP in a healthcare setting, preferably in a related specialty. New graduates with relevant nursing experience in neurosurgery may be considered.

Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is mandatory.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Infection Control Certification.
  • Current DEA registration for narcotics.
