Bridge Operator

We are seeking a skilled Bridge Operator to join our team at Florida Gulf & Atlantic Railroad. As a Bridge Operator, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our swing bridges.
Key Responsibilities- Compliance and Safety
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Ensure compliance with all Coast Guard rules and regulations for safety and operations.
- Bridge Operation
- Start the motor of the swing bridge and operate the controls to turn the bridge, giving either vessels or railroad trains passage.
- Communicate and/or signal vessels to pass through the opening and record time, direction, and name/number of vessels passing through.
- Communication and Coordination
- Communicate with train dispatchers, train crews, maintenance of way (MOW) equipment, and vessels using two-way radio, marine radio, or telephone.
- Communicate with the Coast Guard.
- Maintenance and Repair
- Inspect the drawbridge, track, passing railcars, and auxiliary equipment for defects and debris and make minor repairs and adjustments.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on the bridge operating system and document repair.
- Accident Reporting and Support
- Gather information on accidents occurring on or to the bridge.
- Assist the MOW team in the performance of their duties as needed.
- Education and Experience
- High School diploma/GED
- Valid Driver's License
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, balancing, climbing, crawling, and working in confined spaces and over/near water.
- Ability to climb ladders.
- Demonstrated auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
- Ability to wear safety equipment, including but not limited to fall protection and a life vest.
- Ability to meet and comply with the manufacturer's weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing duties.
- Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of oral and written communications – both general and technical.
- Ability to provide clear instructions/directions.
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Basic math.
- Basic mechanical understanding.
