Role Summary:
The Assistant Manager for the Medical/Surgical Department plays a pivotal role in overseeing and guiding nursing operations. This leadership position is accountable for the strategic planning, direction, and evaluation of nursing care within the unit.
The Manager is tasked with supervising, coordinating, and assessing the nursing care delivered in the designated unit(s). Additionally, the Manager ensures that unit activities are aligned with the safe and effective delivery of patient care. Collaboration with the Department Director is essential for implementing performance improvement initiatives, adhering to hospital policies, and managing the financial aspects of the unit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in departmental performance enhancement activities.
- Conduct interviews and hire nursing personnel.
- Manage nursing staff schedules.
- Serve as a clinical resource for the nursing unit.
- Advocate for nursing staff interests.
- Evaluate staff performance and provide feedback.
- Oversee disciplinary actions, counseling, and staff development.
- Participate in the financial oversight of the unit.
- Contribute to financial planning and budgeting processes.
- Organize and lead staff meetings.
- Coordinate unit-specific training sessions.
- Ensure clinical activities meet age-specific standards.
- Maintain 24-hour accountability for unit operations and services.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements within the department.

Qualifications Required:
- Valid RN or LPN license in the state of practice.
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience in a relevant area.
- 2-3 years of management experience in a Med/Surg setting is preferred.
- Consideration for charge nurse experience with 5+ years in Med/Surg.
