Job Overview

Position Summary:

The full-time faculty member will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality education and providing academic guidance to students at Bay Mills Community College. Reporting to the Dean of Science and Allied Health Education and collaborating with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Department Chair, the faculty member is expected to uphold academic standards and foster a student-centered learning environment. This position is funded through grants, with the potential for extension beyond the initial funding period.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct engaging and effective instruction.
  2. Attend all scheduled classes, labs, and clinics for the full duration.
  3. Utilize diverse teaching strategies and resources to accommodate students from various educational backgrounds.
  4. Provide detailed course syllabi that outline measurable objectives, grading criteria, prerequisites, and student responsibilities.
  5. Evaluate student performance continuously and offer constructive feedback.
  6. Maintain accurate records as required by the academic administration.
  7. Implement the college's Assessment of Student Learning Program.
  8. Recommend instructional materials to the Department Chair and library.
  9. Commit to a minimum of 24 hours of on-campus activities, including course preparation, instruction, and student advising, with flexibility for remote work.
  10. Engage in college committees and activities as assigned.
  11. Offer academic advising to students as necessary.
  12. Maintain proficiency in the college's student management software and online course delivery systems.
  13. Support departmental recruitment efforts to ensure a robust student population.
  14. Adhere to college policies regarding documentation for absences and academic integrity issues.
  15. Collaborate with the Department Chair on assessment and curriculum development.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience in curriculum design and individual/group instruction.
  2. Familiarity with innovative teaching methods, including group projects and distance learning.
  3. Experience in academic advising.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and participate in college committees.
  6. Experience working with diverse populations.
  7. Preferred experience in educational settings involving Native American communities.

Educational Requirements:

Instructors must possess credentials as mandated by the Higher Learning Commission and Bay Mills Community College:

  1. A minimum of 18 graduate-level credits in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field from an accredited institution is required. A Master's degree in a science discipline is preferred.
  2. Prior teaching experience at the college level, especially in community colleges, is preferred. Experience in Tribal educational contexts is advantageous.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Regularly required to sit, with occasional walking and standing.
  2. May involve bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  3. Requires repetitive hand movements.
  4. Work is primarily conducted indoors, with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
