Position Overview:

The Materials Scientist is responsible for conducting essential testing that supports the daily functions of the Chemistry Laboratory, utilizing independent judgment and expertise.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the precision and dependability of laboratory analytical instruments
  • Conduct chemical evaluations of final steel samples, VAR/ESR samples, and product assessments
  • Perform maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments
  • Complete daily reporting tasks related to production, hydrogen levels, and chemistry
  • Prepare samples for analysis
  • Maintain sample preparation equipment
  • Review and update procedures as necessary
  • Identify and label jominy samples in the absence of metallurgical lab personnel
  • Act impartially, demonstrate competence, and adhere to Quality System standards
  • Engage in ongoing analytical testing competency and proficiency assessments
  • Assist in the Metallurgy Lab as required
  • Travel (local, national, international) as needed for customer visits, conferences, and other facilities
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety regulations
  • Exhibit a collaborative spirit and meet attendance expectations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field is required; a degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in a chemistry laboratory setting with a focus on quality assurance
  • Experience with X-ray analysis is advantageous
  • Completion of EQS in-house training: Theoretical Steelmaking Course (unless superseded by technical degree) and OES Training Class
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with personnel at all organizational levels
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to travel as required
  • Willingness to travel when necessary
  • Strong work ethic and eagerness to learn
