General Information

This position entails conducting professional laboratory operations focused on chemical and biochemical assessments. The incumbent will engage in a range of physical and chemical evaluations. Responsibilities may encompass, but are not limited to, performing technical research activities that involve the analysis and interpretation of research data, preparing detailed reports on research findings, mentoring laboratory staff, and overseeing the maintenance and care of laboratory instruments and facilities.

Working Conditions
Work will occur in both indoor and outdoor settings; exposure to high noise levels may occur during specific tasks. The role requires the ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 50 pounds, swim a minimum distance of 100 yards, and navigate uneven or wet terrain.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

1. Supervise and assist in the collection, documentation, and preparation of laboratory samples and cultures for both experimental and routine analysis.

2. Execute technical laboratory research tasks involving the evaluation of research or routine data; compile reports detailing research outcomes utilizing various statistical techniques.

3. Conduct chemical and biological assessments that necessitate a comprehensive understanding of related properties and specimen characteristics.

4. Provide training to laboratory technicians on established laboratory methodologies; collaborate with laboratory management to develop and implement laboratory protocols and assess laboratory research projects.

5. Ensure compliance with quality assurance standards for sampling and analysis as mandated by regulatory bodies.

6. Maintain accurate inventory records of laboratory supplies and equipment, initiating requests for replenishment as necessary.

7. Perform wet chemistry analyses as part of quality assurance for daily water production as required.

Additional Duties:
Perform other related tasks as needed, including emergency response duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, natural sciences, environmental sciences, or a related discipline is required. A minimum of three years of relevant laboratory experience within the last six years is essential, along with at least one year of experience in instrumental analysis within the last four years. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a NELAC certified environmental laboratory and familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is highly desirable. Proficiency in using analytical instruments such as GC, GC/MS, HPLC/MS, AA, IC, and/or Discrete Auto-analyzers is preferred. Prior supervisory experience is also advantageous.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Proficient in routine laboratory analysis and technical research methodologies.
- Understanding of gas or ion chromatography, mass spectrometry, and atomic absorption/emission analyses.
- Awareness of the implications of test results in relation to compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Familiarity with contemporary laboratory equipment, terminology, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to effectively manage and guide the work of others.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Capability to develop new procedures and methodologies based on standard practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Competence in identifying colors and odors and performing duties safely under varying environmental conditions.
