Key Responsibilities- Collect and prepare blood specimens for laboratory testing
- Represent the laboratory to patients and their families, providing excellent customer service and communication skills
- Review physician orders, obtain clinical and demographic information, and verify patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested
- Perform phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, micro collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, and therapeutic phlebotomy
- Ensure positive patient identification and prioritize duties to achieve efficiency
- Respond to changes in work schedules and volumes, and continually use time to departmental advantage when work schedules are light
- Answer the telephone to schedule tests, relay accurate information, and respond to stat draw requests from all patient care areas in a STAT manner
- Maintain equipment and inventory of needed supplies, and keep the patient drawing area clean and tidy
- Recognize the Phlebotomy-Registrar's role as it relates to the overall function of the laboratory, patient care, customer service, and the business of healthcare
- Perform medical necessity checks prior to out-patient phlebotomy, and ensure specimens are packaged properly and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner
- Serve as a resource and teach new employees
- Will consider entry-level graduates
- Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees, and the public
- Able to work under pressure and willing to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions
- Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem-solving
- Phlebotomy certification within 1 year
- Essential competencies and skills, including knowledge of office equipment, clear communication skills, knowledge of basic computer programs, and ability to keep confidential information regarding patients and team members
- Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification and high school graduate or equivalent
