Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

To provide high-quality anesthetist services for the care and treatment of patients.

Essential Duties:
  • Obtains appropriate health history, including biophysical and psychosocial data.
  • Conducts physician screening assessments and recommends or requests diagnostic studies.
  • Selects, obtains, or administers pre-anesthetic medications and documents the pre-anesthetic evaluation and obtains informed consent for anesthesia.
  • Obtains, prepares, or utilizes equipment, monitors, supplies, and drugs used for anesthesia administration and performs safety checks as needed.
  • Selects, obtains, or administers anesthetics, adjutant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids to manage anesthesia and maintain physiologic homeostasis.
  • Performs tracheal intubation and extubation and provides mechanical ventilation.
  • Manages regional anesthetic techniques, including subarachnoid, epidural, and caudal blocks, and provides peri-anesthetic monitoring and responds to abnormal findings.
  • Recognizes and treats cardiac dysrhythmias through electrocardiogram monitoring and responds to abnormal patient responses during anesthesia.
  • Manages patient fluid, blood, electrolyte, and acid-base balance and evaluates patient response during emergence from anesthesia.
  • Provides anesthesia care consistent with infection control and anesthetic safety principles and documents all aspects of anesthesia-related care in the medical record.
  • Provides a thorough report of the patient's psychological and physical condition, peri-anesthetic course, and anticipated problems to the post-anesthetic healthcare provider.
  • Provides post-anesthesia follow-up and evaluation of the patient's response to anesthesia and initiates corrective actions as needed.
Requirements:
  • Current Michigan RN license and CRNA Specialty Certification
  • ACLS certification required within six months of hire
Work Experience:

Education:

Graduate from a nurse anesthesia education program accredited by the AANA Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

Strong assessment skills, creative problem-solving skills, time management skills, and effective communication skills.
