Position Title: Research and Development Specialist

Location: Kailua-Kona, HI

Compensation: $31/hour (Based on Experience)

Employment Type: Temporary (Approximately 4-month contract)

Overview

This role is a full-time, non-exempt position focused on conducting research in algal cultivation both in-house and under various service agreements. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director of Research & Development and will be tasked with the following responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the inventory of materials essential for research operations; collaborate with the Director to ensure timely procurement of necessary supplies.
  • Maintain laboratory stock cultures of algae, including foundational stocks for production and research purposes, as well as associated microbial communities.
  • Execute tasks necessary for rearing algae at intermediate scales, including media preparation and scaling laboratory cultures for inoculation.
  • Regularly sample cultures and conduct analyses on various parameters such as density, growth rate, and photosynthetic efficiency.
  • Prepare and dispatch samples for external laboratory research as required.
  • Collaborate with the Director to assemble teams for specific research tasks as needed.
  • Learn to identify eukaryotic pests and weeds, isolating these contaminants for further analysis.
  • Maintain detailed and secure laboratory records, sharing them appropriately with the Director and project team members.
  • Engage in regular communication with team members and stakeholders as necessary.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external distribution, assisting the Director with presentations and meetings for externally funded projects.
  • Work collaboratively with other personnel within the R&D Department.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Adhere to GMP and safety protocols in all tasks, contributing to a safe laboratory environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, ensuring tasks align with core mission objectives and budgetary requirements.

Physical Requirements

This position necessitates standing and working at a laboratory bench, as well as sitting at a computer. The role may involve walking on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is conducted in a laboratory setting, as well as outdoors in a warm climate. The role involves handling chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment and may require protection from sun exposure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Marine Science, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience and/or experience in algal production or aquaculture. Familiarity with molecular biology techniques is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in mathematics and computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
