GENERAL OVERVIEW:


The role involves assisting in the comprehensive oversight of the designated laboratory sector, focusing on daily functions, quality assurance, process enhancement, equipment upkeep, and staff education and proficiency.

Provides support in managing the laboratory during the absence of the department head.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates with the supervisor in the daily management of the department, including personnel tasks, attendance tracking, onboarding, and training.

As a Team Leader, undertakes specific responsibilities of the supervisor in their absence, adhering to CAP/CLIA standards, which includes aiding in employee assessments, recruitment, and employee relations as necessary.

In alignment with various regulatory and accreditation bodies, reviews, assesses, and coordinates quality assurance, quality control, and proficiency testing; maintains thorough documentation.

Assists in investigating quality discrepancies and developing initiatives for process improvement. Engages in projects, committees, and other laboratory functions as assigned.
Acts as a technical resource for laboratory instruments and departmental protocols. Supervises equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical procedures. Coordinates methodology and instrument evaluation and validation studies.

In partnership with the supervisor, develops, maintains, and updates procedural manuals, workflows, and policies in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards; assists in preparing for test launches.

In collaboration with the supervisor, designs and implements employee orientation, education, training, and competency assessments on testing methodologies, departmental policies, and instrumentation.

Coordinates clinical education programs for medical laboratory science students, residents, fellows, and medical students as required.

Responsible for creating curriculum content, delivering both practical and theoretical instruction, developing assessments, grading, and evaluating performance, as well as interviewing and selecting students.

Conducts routine and complex procedures within the specific discipline utilizing laboratory instruments or manual techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To successfully perform this role, an individual must be capable of executing each essential duty effectively. Education / Training:


Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in biology, including one semester in microbiology, and 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) in chemistry, including one semester in organic or biochemistry, which may be obtained within or in addition to the baccalaureate degree.

Completion of a clinical laboratory program accredited by NAACLS or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where the individual performs high complexity testing.


Work Experience :


A minimum of 2 years of direct technical experience is required, having worked in an accredited, licensed laboratory, with at least 2 years of experience in the specific laboratory discipline being applied for.

Completion of an accredited clinical internship or equivalent experience/training as required by the Board of Registry.

Certification, Licensure, Registration :


Must be certified as per policy; specialty certification in the relevant discipline is preferred ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist - MLS(ASCP)CM (Effective October 23, 2009) See Notes below.
