Job Overview

The Locomotive Engineering Supervisor (LES) plays a crucial role in overseeing the training, management, and development of Locomotive Engineers (LE), Student Locomotive Engineers (LET), and Manager Locomotive Engineers. This position ensures compliance with locomotive operations, train handling protocols, and general responsibilities of locomotive engineers. Additionally, the LES is responsible for monitoring safety performance and providing corrective feedback.

Main Responsibilities

Training and Development

  • Provide comprehensive training, supervision, and coaching to LE and LET in train handling and locomotive responsibilities.
  • Facilitate and support various training programs, including LET, Locomotive Event Recorder (LER), Distributed Power (DP), and Trip Optimizer (TO).
  • Contribute to classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and evaluation rides for LET.
  • Conduct evaluations in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations for LE and Remote Control Operators (RCO).
  • Incorporate locomotive simulators into training sessions as needed.
  • Educate LE on new technologies and operational practices.
  • Foster positive employee behaviors through feedback, recognition, and coaching.
  • Advise on cost control and asset utilization in training planning and execution.

Data Analysis and Performance Monitoring

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret LER data for incident investigations and performance assessments.
  • Utilize CN's computer systems to enhance LER and Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) analysis.
  • Evaluate performance metrics derived from LER data and other relevant observations.

Operational Planning and Support

  • Organize and prioritize LES duties effectively.
  • Adapt plans promptly to address unexpected events or disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate LET training records and analyze trends related to train separations.
  • Ensure locomotive simulators are operational and up-to-date.
  • Research new locomotive technologies and develop relevant training materials.
  • Provide education to Transportation Officers and management on train operations.

Guidance and Collaboration

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to Divisional Officers on locomotive operations and related concerns.
  • Engage with Transportation Managers and other stakeholders to provide recommendations on safety and operational matters.
  • Participate in safety initiatives, committee meetings, and operational reviews.
  • Collaborate with Operating Practices to update operational manuals and guidelines.

Working Conditions

This role requires flexibility to work in various weather conditions and involves irregular hours. The incumbent must be available for on-call duties to respond to critical situations. Frequent travel (approximately 80%) is expected, primarily within the United States.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a certified Locomotive Engineer.

Education and Certifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Locomotive Engineer, with qualifications in United States Operating Rules (USOR) or General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR).
  • Valid Driver's License and passport.
