Organization Overview: After School Matters is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago, dedicated to providing after-school and summer programs for high school teens. Our mission is to empower nearly 19,000 teens annually by helping them explore their talents and develop essential skills for success in higher education and beyond.
Position Summary: We are currently seeking dedicated part-time instructors to lead specialized programs for groups of 15-30 high school students aged 14 to 20. The focus of the program will be on computer science, particularly an introductory course on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This course aims to provide participants with a foundational understanding of AI concepts, applications, and ethical considerations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Introduce a diverse group of teens to various aspects of the computer science field while creating a positive and collaborative learning environment.
- Stay informed about current trends and technologies in the industry.
- Design, organize, and oversee weekly lessons that align with the curriculum.
- Plan and implement engaging field trips, master classes, and guest speaker events to enhance the educational experience.
- Supervise participants during field trips and other activities.
- Maintain open communication with the After School Matters Program Specialist regarding any issues or updates.
- Attend all required planning and program sessions, including orientation and professional development workshops.
- Assist in the recruitment and selection process of program participants.
- Track program activities such as attendance and evaluations using an online data management system.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Maintain a supervision ratio of approximately 15 teens per instructor.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred.
- Familiarity with Chicago neighborhoods is required.
- Experience teaching teenagers is highly desirable.
- A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential.
Physical and Work Environment: The role may require standing for extended periods, and the work environment is typically moderate to loud.
