The role of Ophthalmic Medical Assistant is more than just a job; it is a pathway to a fulfilling career. Over time, you may have the opportunity to become a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), Ophthalmic Scribe Certified (OSC), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT). Responsibilities:

This position requires strong customer service skills, excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, and a degree of independent decision-making.

Ophthalmic skills (after training) include but are not limited to:

  • Collecting and documenting patient medical histories.
  • Assessing visual acuity.
  • Conducting automated refraction tests.
  • Administering prescribed eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions.
  • Performing office duties and clinical tasks, including data entry into electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Providing patient services and support.
  • Maintaining and managing ophthalmic equipment and instruments.

Qualifications:
  • Reliable transportation is required for travel to various locations as needed.
  • Flexibility to travel to different offices as required.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Willingness to seek guidance in unfamiliar areas.
  • Capability to identify inconsistencies in information.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited high school is required.
