New Haven, Connecticut, United States Yale New Haven Health Full time
Position Overview

As a vital component of our healthcare organization, every team member is expected to embrace and embody the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and uphold our Values. These core values - integrity, patient-centered care, respect, accountability, and compassion - are essential in guiding our actions as individuals and professionals on a daily basis.

The Registered Professional Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role within the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, embodying the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to deliver exceptional patient-centered care. The RN practices within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, adhering to the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. Exemplifying leadership, delegation, collaboration, and effective communication, the RN ensures quality outcomes in patient care.

YNHHS nurses operate within a professional practice model that emphasizes "Achieving outcomes through Autonomy and Accountability". We prioritize Nursing Professional Governance and utilize evidence and data to inform our practice, always placing the patient and family at the center of care.

The RN is responsible for providing care that:
  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, integrating cultural and diversity considerations into practice.
  • Involves effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Respects patients' values, preferences, expressed needs, and knowledge during holistic data collection, outcome formulation, and evaluation processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Standards of Practice: RN practice is guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, which delineate a competent level of nursing care through the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assessment: The RN collects relevant data and information concerning the healthcare consumer's health or situation.
  • Diagnosis: The RN analyzes assessment data to identify actual and potential diagnoses or issues.
  • Outcomes Identification: The RN determines expected outcomes for a care plan tailored to the healthcare consumer or situation.
  • Planning: The RN develops and adjusts a care plan that outlines strategies and alternatives to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Implementation: The RN executes the established plan.
  • Coordination of Care: The RN oversees care delivery and transitions in care.
  • Health Teaching and Promotion: The RN employs strategies to enhance health and ensure a safe environment.
  • Evaluation: The RN assesses progress toward achieving outcomes.

Professional Performance Standards: The ANA Standards of Professional Performance outline a competent level of behavior in the professional role, encompassing ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, quality of practice, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is expected to engage in professional activities, including leadership, commensurate with their education and position.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred. All newly hired registered nurses must possess current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience: The Registered Nurse role serves as the foundational job description for all RNs, with encouragement to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure: Must be a licensed and currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification is highly encouraged.

Special Skills: The Registered Nurse role is the foundational job description for all RNs, with encouragement to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.
