Position Overview

Salud Para La Gente (SALUD) is dedicated to delivering high-quality, comprehensive, and affordable healthcare services to underserved low-income populations in the Monterey Bay region, including Santa Cruz County and North Monterey County. Established in Watsonville in 1978 as a storefront "free clinic," we evolved into a federally qualified community health center (FQHC) in 1992 due to the increasing demand for health services. Currently, we operate as a primary healthcare network with 11 clinic locations and over 400 staff members, committed to providing exceptional services to patients of all ages.

Role Summary

We are in search of a dedicated individual to fulfill the role of Language Access Specialist/Mixteco Interpreter. This position involves providing interpretation services in Mixteco, English, and Spanish, while also coordinating and standardizing processes to enhance the quality of interpretation and translation services for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to exceptional customer service, patient confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and teamwork. This role is situated within the Patient Services department and reports to the Director of Patient Services.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Deliver Mixteco-English-Spanish interpretation across all services and locations of Salud.
  2. Coordinate and standardize the process of connecting LEP patients with suitable language support services, including in-person and tele-interpretation.
  3. Exhibit cultural proficiency and engage effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  4. Develop and manage interpreting schedules, accommodating both pre-scheduled and on-demand interpretation requests.
  5. Organize and oversee Salud's language access resources and workflows, serving as the primary contact for language support services.
  6. Provide training and educational resources to staff as necessary.
  7. Act as a liaison between language support vendors and Salud, managing contract logistics and payments.
  8. Monitor and evaluate the LEP patient experience through surveys, data analysis, and observations, implementing improvements based on findings.
  9. Participate in local training sessions and collaborative meetings aimed at enhancing access to community services for LEP individuals.
  10. Lead the adoption of technological solutions for interpretation and translation services for Salud patients.
  11. Gather staff feedback and identify opportunities for enhancing language support workflows and resources, implementing improvements as needed.
  12. Direct patient inquiries and requests appropriately.
  13. Adhere to and exceed communication guidelines and expectations with internal and external stakeholders.
  14. Collaborate with Salud's Community Health Services and Communications departments to facilitate effective patient communication.
  15. Communicate with warmth and professionalism, utilizing appropriate verbal and non-verbal cues in all interactions.
  16. Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all relevant privacy laws.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Trilingual in Mixteco, English, and Spanish.
  • High School diploma or GED; Associate's degree preferred.
  • Prior experience as a professional interpreter is preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies such as telephonic or video remote interpreting.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold Salud's communication standards with all stakeholders.
  • Valid California Driver's License and current vehicle insurance; ability to travel between locations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a collaborative team player.
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and understand patient privacy regulations.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, type, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $21.86 - $26.56 per hour.
