At YWCA Charleston, we are committed to fostering self-sufficiency and independence in our community. As a Lead Teacher, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality childcare and education services to infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children year-round.

About the Role

The Lead Teacher will work closely with their peers under the direction of the Program and Assistant Directors. You will be responsible for directing activities in a childcare room and assisting in developing programs and activities that cater to the learning and social needs of each child.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Curriculum: Create a stimulating curriculum emphasizing age-appropriate activities to help children learn and develop.
  • Schedule and Structure: Develop a schedule and structure in the room that promotes positive interactions with children, guides and directs their behavior, and reduces or eliminates the need for reactive behavior intervention.
  • Behavior Intervention: Provide behavior intervention as needed without recourse to physical or emotional punishment.
  • Guidance and Supervision: Provide guidance and supervision to assistant teachers, teacher aides, interns, and volunteers to ensure they know when and how to seek appropriate direction or assistance.
  • Parent Relationships: Develop positive relationships with parents and encourage them to be involved in their child's care.
  • Policies and Procedures: Explain all center policies to current and potential parents and conduct two parent conferences per year.
  • Assessments and Monitoring: Complete assessments on children as determined by the schedule and monitor classroom configuration, staff practices, and children's behavior to ensure compliance with State childcare licensing standards.
  • Staff Training: Train new staff to comply with policies and procedures of the individual classroom and general childcare practices.
  • Administrative Activities: Assist with administrative tasks such as signing children in and out, maintaining information sheets, and dispensing medication as directed by parents and/or physicians.
What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary range of $10.50 to $12.75 hourly, making this an attractive opportunity for those passionate about early childhood education.
