Position Overview
The Newborn Screening Technician plays a crucial role in conducting essential screenings for infants, including hearing assessments, PKU tests, and transcutaneous bilirubin evaluations, while ensuring accurate documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR). This position is accountable for adhering to all sanitation regulations and standards set forth by regulatory bodies and the medical center, including compliance with established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts hearing screenings for all newborns prior to discharge and accurately documents results in the electronic medical record (EMR). Collaborates with the patient care team to clarify orders as needed.
  • Informs nursing staff, attending physicians, and Neonatologists of hearing screening outcomes, educational requirements, outpatient appointments, and any other relevant information.
  • Collects and reports hearing screening results, patient logs, and any additional information as mandated by hospital policy and state regulations.
  • Handles data entry, maintains screening equipment, and manages supply orders and paperwork associated with the newborn hearing screening program. Aids in the care and upkeep of departmental equipment and supplies.
  • Executes PKU screenings using the appropriate testing materials. Ensures PKU samples are collected, documented, and prepared for daily transport.
  • Maintains documentation in line with policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local health regulations. * Prepares and keeps necessary records, reports, and files for administrative and compliance purposes. * Maintains patient medical records and logs. * Utilizes computer systems for data entry and retrieval.
  • Adheres to established departmental and organizational policies, compliance/quality improvement, safety protocols, and infection control standards. Provides coverage for relief and absences as necessary, accommodating various shifts, weekends, and holidays.
