Position Overview:
The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is a renowned nonprofit organization committed to the treatment and rehabilitation of wildlife through advanced veterinary practices, research, education, and conservation efforts.
CROW stands as one of the premier rehabilitation centers for both native and migratory wildlife, managing over 6,000 patients annually, encompassing more than 200 species of sick, injured, and orphaned animals.
As a teaching hospital, CROW offers invaluable educational experiences for college students, veterinary students, veterinary technology students, and practicing veterinarians.
Key Responsibilities of the Staff Veterinarian:
Oversee and manage a diverse range of wildlife patients efficiently.
Provide ongoing supervision, training, and mentorship to Veterinary Interns and students.
Ensure the delivery of exceptional care in alignment with the latest scientific and evidence-based practices.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Patient Care
Work on-site for a minimum of 40 hours weekly, performing and/or supervising medical, surgical, and rehabilitative care for all wildlife patients.
Be available for consultations by veterinary interns or other staff as needed.Supervise Veterinary Interns with case assessments and procedures, assuming primary case responsibility as required.
Conduct patient admissions and intake examinations as necessary.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, reviewing veterinary intern documentation.
Perform emergency duties as required or delegate and consult on after-hours emergencies.
Collaborate with the Medical and Research Director to establish hospital policies and maintain a comprehensive policy and procedure manual regarding patient care.
Conduct biannual examinations of all ambassador animals and additional assessments throughout the year to ensure their health.
Ensure that hospital staff appraises all animals and their enclosures weekly, addressing any concerns with caretakers.
2) EducationCollaborate with volunteers, students, interns, and staff to provide instruction and oversight within the hospital.
Conduct orientations, mid-point evaluations, and exit interviews for students, interns, and staff, completing necessary documentation in partnership with the Hospital Training Coordinator and/or Office Manager.
Assist in the recruitment and selection of veterinary interns alongside the Medical and Research Director.Deliver educational lectures to students/interns at least once a week
Present educational sessions periodically to the public, either on-site or in the community as required.
3) AdministrationSupervise interns, students, volunteers, and staff.
Report significant hospital developments to the Medical and Research Director, Executive Director, or Board as necessary.
Implement emergency patient evacuation protocols as needed during natural or other disasters.Conduct quarterly inventories of controlled substances.
Collaborate with the Medical and Research Director to manage the hospital budget and ensure all personnel maintain appropriate credentials and licensing.
Develop, enhance, and implement patient care protocols.Communicate with local organizations and biologists regarding animal surveillance as necessary.
Ensure compliance with federal and state permitting requirements for the organization
Foster a positive workplace culture within the CROW hospital, promoting a safe and supportive environment for staff and volunteers.
4) ResearchAssist the Medical and Research Director in conducting research as requested.
Support efforts to secure funding for the CROW hospital as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree.
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Florida or capable of obtaining licensure within 30 days.
DEA license must be acquired within 30 days of Florida licensure.
Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in wildlife, zoological, or avian medicine.
ACZM board certification eligibility or a desire to pursue ACZM specialization is preferred.
Current tetanus and rabies vaccinations.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Flexibility to work a schedule that may include weekends and holidays.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, kneel, and sit/stand for extended periods.
Experience in the rehabilitation of sea turtles is advantageous.
