Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ferry Chief Engineer to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Hampton Roads District, Jamestown Scotland Ferry. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our ferry vessels.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels to ensure safety of passengers, crew, and property.
- Perform minor repairs to all systems and maintain vessel readiness for USCG inspections.
- Record accurate fuel readings and maintain ship's engineering log with all pertinent information.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and ensure engine room security doors are closed and secure at all times.
- Provide information and assistance to passengers and resolve issues in a professional manner.
Requirements
- Knowledge and ability to operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels.
- Knowledge of United States Coast Guard regulations governing ferry operations.
- Ability to train others and diagnose and repair primary and ancillary systems on the ferry.
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, schematics, and manuals and complete and maintain records and reports.
- Must hold a minimum of MMC-endorsed as a Chief Engineer of motor vessels of at least 3000 H.P.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred, equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and 1st Aid and CPR Certification.
Working Conditions
This position is the core of our emergency response agency and requires working outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
