Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team. As a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for performing quality control and complex patient testing, developing skills, and maintaining competency in routine, "specials," and assigned laboratory areas.

You will be responsible for performing patient tests and quality control material tests, reporting results in accordance with departmental policy, and maintaining error rates consistent with established departmental standards.

Additionally, you will be responsible for clinical correlation of results with other known patient parameters, prioritizing and managing workload to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT), and maintaining competence and adding new skills as technologies change.

You will also be responsible for correctly using supplies and reagents, assisting in inventory management, and maintaining inventory levels to ensure operational continuity.

As a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for performing advanced equipment trouble-shooting and maintenance responsibilities, including routine and complex equipment maintenance, and documenting malfunctions and resolutions in a timely manner.

You will also be responsible for serving as a team leader, facilitating smooth transitions between shifts, and coordinating product/method/new test development as needed.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for initiating activities associated with quality, safety, and compliance programs, leading quality assurance monitoring efforts, and reporting and investigating quality issues promptly and accurately.

You will also be responsible for serving as an expert for analytical and technical questions and problems, addressing staff inquiries in a correct and timely manner, and providing assistance as requested by staff and management to investigate and resolve problems.

As a trainer, role model, and mentor, you will be responsible for providing consultation related to job responsibilities, training, and career development to Clinical Laboratory Scientist 1, Clinical Laboratory Scientist 2, students, and healthcare professionals as requested.

You will also be responsible for onboarding techniques to engage and retain new employees, selecting training methods to accommodate employee needs, and assessing trainees, including problems or concerns, in a constructive manner.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for communicating appropriately using good interpersonal skills, projecting a positive, professional demeanor, and delivering information to patients and staff in a supportive, timely, and understandable manner.

You will also be responsible for demonstrating accountability for actions and decisions, soliciting and accepting feedback in a positive manner, and offering constructive input to support the work unit.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for showing a commitment to providing the highest level of patient care, collecting, labeling, and preparing specimens for testing, maintaining required documentation for all lab procedures, and processing requisitions for testing.

You will also be responsible for preparing and distributing reports, adhering to all workplace and trade safety laws, regulations, standards, and practices, and performing quality control testing to assure accuracy of patient testing.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for performing equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, practicing safety policies to maintain a safe working environment, and performing all duties to satisfy regulations in preparation for inspections.

You will also be responsible for cooperating within a team to achieve goals and deliverables, providing information and consultation to requestors, recognizing interdependencies with other areas, and supporting other staff as needed.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for sharing and initiating regular and professional communication with co-workers, participating in regular staff meetings, and using knowledge acquired through training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job.

You will also be responsible for performing competency and proficiency testing to assure maintenance of skills, completing educational activities to continually improve skills, and assisting consultants.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for participating in improvement of methods and processes, and may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree - from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science or equivalent.

Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program.

OR

Bachelor's Degree to include 35 semester hours comprised of Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Math AND 5 years fulltime experience in Blood Bank, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology.

OR

Bachelor's Degree to include 30 semester hours in Biology and Chemistry AND 5 years fulltime experience in categorical exam area

Experience:

3 year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist required

Technologist/Scientist Cert from ASCP or AMT-MT Required

Licensure:

(BB, C, H, MT/MLS, M, MB) Required

Additional Skills/Requirements Required :

All individuals certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004 must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP).

All individuals who are certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006 must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).

Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.

Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.

Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.

Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.

Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff, and the public.

Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.

Ability to follow written protocols.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to communicate clearly.
