Position Overview:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and proficiency for specific patient demographics and is responsible for maintaining competence in nursing practice and clinical outcomes in line with contemporary evidence-based practice standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the planning, execution, and assessment of process-improvement initiatives aimed at promoting excellence, ensuring patient and staff safety, and enhancing the quality of care.
  • Takes on a leadership role in achieving departmental and organizational objectives.
  • Supports ongoing peer review and mentoring programs.

Qualifications:

Education: Must possess a degree from an accredited nursing program with a Master's degree in nursing or a related field, such as healthcare administration or business administration; a BSN is required if the Master's degree is in an unrelated discipline.

Experience: A minimum of three years of recent clinical experience is required.

Licensure/Certification: Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of South Carolina or hold a current compact/multi-state license as a Registered Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State. A current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card is also required. Nursing specialty certification must be obtained within six months of starting the position (applicable certifications include approved ANCC clinical specialty or nursing leadership certifications).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding of professional nursing theory and practice to provide and evaluate patient care.
  • Familiarity with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Ability to apply and adapt professional nursing principles, methods, and techniques to deliver ongoing patient care.
  • Proficient in identifying issues and proposing solutions.
  • Skilled in record-keeping and report writing.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, hospital staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards and analyze situations using critical thinking.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to remain calm and efficient in emergency situations.

Work Environment:

This role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting/moving patients. There may be intermittent lifting or carrying of up to 50 lbs, and the position requires constant reaching with hands and arms. Exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue is possible, along with the risk of exposure to infectious materials and communicable diseases.
