Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Gas Technician IV-Welder to join our team at the City of Monroe. As a key member of our Energy Services department, you will be responsible for performing complex technical work in the fabrication and welding of natural gas facilities and appurtenances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform welding in the shop and in the field, ensuring the safe installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities and appurtenances.
  • Maintain tap equipment and design and fabricate meter sets.
  • Assist with natural gas system repair and fabricate commercial/industrial meter sets, regulator stations, and perform installations.
  • Perform welding of steel main/service lines, including removing, replacement, relocation, and abandonment.
  • Manage welding shop and maintain welding equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Perform customer service and emergency response as needed, completing work orders and connecting and disconnecting gas service.
Requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of methods used in welding, cutting, brazing, and heating pipe and related fittings.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • General knowledge of city engineering standards and specifications related to gas system installation methods and materials.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others and establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, and the general public.
  • Ability to read utility maps to determine location of gas pipelines and read operation and service manuals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employment.
  • Ability to pass American Petroleum Institute (API) 1104 welding qualification test.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and basic first aid certification within one year of employment.
