Position Overview

Introduction

South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) is a dedicated human services organization committed to mobilizing community resources and implementing sustainable initiatives that compassionately assist our neighbors in meeting essential needs, achieving self-sufficiency, and fostering community connections. We provide direct support (food, clothing, and utility assistance) alongside a variety of programs including service coordination, youth initiatives, and community centers.

Program Overview:

SHIM's Youth Mentoring Program aims to create a safe, multicultural environment for adolescents, particularly those from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. This program helps participants build a supportive community of peers and trusted adults, explore their interests and skills, and enhance their social, emotional, and academic competencies to develop into resilient young adults. The program operates year-round, providing continuous support throughout the academic year and into the summer months.

Role Summary:

The Youth Engagement Specialist is a part-time, year-round role responsible for overseeing student engagement initiatives. This includes daily check-ins, recruitment of new participants, retention strategies, and communication with parents. The Specialist will collaborate with the Youth Mentoring Coordinator and other team members to plan and facilitate evening group activities for secondary and college-aged students. Additionally, the Specialist will manage transportation logistics to ensure safe travel for participants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a daily check-in system for all returning and new participants to ensure safety and accurate record-keeping.
  • Design innovative strategies to attract and retain students in grades 6 through 12.
  • Establish effective parent engagement initiatives to encourage involvement and enhance parental skills.
  • Assist the Program Coordinator in creating and executing weekly plans for evening group sessions.
  • Collaborate on strategies to achieve program objectives, ensure sustainability, and address the needs of all participants.
  • Support the development of a new group for college-aged individuals.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare necessary documentation, including consent forms.
  • Coordinate transportation arrangements for all participants.
  • Ensure the maintenance of supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of program spaces.
  • Communicate participant needs (academic, behavioral, social-emotional) to the Coordinator.
  • Engage in activities that foster strong relationships with participants.
  • Assist with organizing field trips as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and participants.
  • Attend team meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Provide support to the Program Coordinator as required.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to maintain a positive demeanor under pressure.
  • Experience working with children, youth, or in community development.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to multicultural community dynamics.
  • Comfort with navigating new programs and initiatives.
  • Ability to effectively guide and support students.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Flexibility and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with secondary academic standards is preferred.
  • Willingness to work evening and occasional weekend hours.
  • Valid driver's license and experience operating larger vehicles is preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate's Degree preferred in fields such as Social Work, Counseling, Education, or Nonprofit Management.
  • Relevant experience or education in youth development, education, social-emotional support, and program management will be considered.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage in physical activities with participants.
  • Clearances as required by law.
  • Completion of Mandated Reporter Training and compliance as a Mandated Reporter.
