This position is within a specialized oncology unit that provides care for adult patients diagnosed with various forms of cancer. The unit supports individuals who are newly diagnosed and may require surgical intervention or are undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Additionally, the unit plays a vital role in caring for patients with Sickle Cell disease.
Position Details
LOCATION: Lancaster, PA
HOURS: Part-time (24 hours per week), Night Shift (combination of 8 & 12-hour shifts), every third weekend, and every other holiday.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is an entry-level registered nurse or an RN with less than 15 months of experience. This role is designed for individuals who demonstrate fundamental safe practices in accordance with the standards set by the American Nurses Association. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice seeks mentorship to integrate essential concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for competent nursing practice. This role reflects the mission of Penn Medicine and adheres to the professional practice competency domains.
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is responsible for delivering direct patient care across a diverse age range, from infants to the elderly. This role encompasses the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family-Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics.
Collaboration with the interprofessional healthcare team is crucial to ensure coordinated care throughout the treatment continuum. The nurse focuses on acquiring the knowledge and skills required to provide personalized care that considers the physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate needs of assigned patients.
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice will seek guidance from experienced clinicians and will benefit from constructive feedback while progressing in their ability to manage increasingly complex patient care scenarios. The nurse will demonstrate how their practice aligns with the organizational vision, mission, and goals, while complying with all regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is expected to complete all required competencies and aims to advance to the Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague level within 18 months of professional practice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Qualified candidates must possess the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
- Integrate the mission, vision, and values of Lancaster General Health into patient care planning.
- Function as both an independent and collaborative member of the healthcare team as outlined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions. Evaluate progress towards care outcomes and adjust care plans based on recognized trends and changes.
- Analyze assessment data to identify diagnoses or issues and formulate culturally and ethically sensitive care plans.
- Implement care knowledgeably and coordinate patient care across multiple disciplines.
- Provide leadership by effectively communicating care standards and supporting team members.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the values of privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.

- Continuously enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, utilizing technology as appropriate.
- Consider safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.
- Manage rapidly changing situations by following established protocols and coordinating with appropriate health team members.
- Engage in process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing continuity in nurse-patient relationships and minimizing redundancies.
- Complete mandatory education and training, including age-specific needs and interpersonal skills.
- Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to evidence-based practice policies and promptly reporting safety concerns.
- Exhibit pride in work through professional interactions with staff, patients, and visitors.
- Pursue experiences and learning opportunities to maintain and enhance clinical and professional skills.
- Provide supervision and mentorship to peers and subordinates to improve the professional practice environment.
- Participate in performance evaluations for peers and subordinates, addressing any issues as the first level of supervision.
- Fulfill on-call responsibilities as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current RN Licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit until an RN license is obtained.
- Temporary Practice Permit holders must take the NCLEX within 60 days of starting in their RN role.
- A graduate registered nurse may only practice under supervision if they hold a current temporary practice permit.
- All Clinical Nurse 1 RNs must successfully complete the Nurse Residency Program.
- CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be a healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs.
- As outlined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. For Magnet designated RN positions, a BSN or higher level nursing degree is required based on established parameters.
