Job Overview:

A Child and Adolescent Mental Health Specialist at KidsPeace is responsible for the assessment and ongoing treatment of assigned patients. The specialist will adhere to evidence-based practice guidelines, professional standards, state and federal requirements, and communicate those needs through the interdisciplinary treatment team planning process.

The specialist will provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, written treatment orders, and admissions on-call review for all legal commitment status documents. They will also evaluate and order the use of restraints, observation levels, and other safety measures as necessary.

Responsibilities:

Assessment & Treatment - Assess patients/clients on admission to programs utilizing available records, client/family interviews, and thorough mental status examination.

Synthesize findings by providing written or dictated notes to include:

a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation consistent with the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, written treatment orders, admissions on-call review for all legal commitment status documents and review and completion of routine and emergency Certificate of Need (CON) as required for care.

Provide ongoing care and psychiatric evaluation updates as required by individual programs.

Evaluate and order the use of restraints, observation levels, and other safety measures as necessary; monitor and revise the need for ongoing use of safety measures.

Offer suggestions for alternatives to limit the use of restraints or other safety measures.

Medication Management:

Prescribe medications within established psychiatric practice standards, monitor effectiveness, educate staff, patient/client and family members on potential benefits and possible side effects.

Order appropriate labs/tests and provide any information required to facilitate authorization of medications.

Documentation:

Utilize templates endorsed by the KidsPeace Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer in organizing and writing/dictating psychiatric evaluations/updates, medication reviews, discharge summaries, progress notes and other such documentation that may be typically required.

Ensure that all services provided are documented in a complete, thorough and timely manner as established by the organization.

Leadership & Supervision:

Assume a leadership role regarding the clinical management of patients/clients in programs assigned. Establish as necessary collaboration/supervision agreements with Advance Practice Professionals (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants) and provide ongoing supervision.

When providing telepsychiatry or outpatient services, maintain availability for communication with on-site staff to answer client, family or staff questions or concerns.

Education & Training:

Maintain continuous, valid state license and Continuing Medical Education credits as required by relevant certifying board.

Develop and present case studies, journal articles or topics of interest for educational forums. Participate in the development of Advance Practice Professionals through mentoring, supervision and provision of ongoing learning opportunities. Provide in-service training to program staff on topics of interest or relevance to programs. Provide supervision to students as assigned through established KidsPeace university affiliation agreements.

Administration:

Participate in the efficient operation of KidsPeace programs by:

  • Serving on committees and task forces as assigned by the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer to include providing necessary research or review;
  • Participating in the established on call rotation including weekdays, weekends, nights and holidays;
  • Accepting short term assignments in other locations and/or telepsychiatry services based on the needs of the organization;
  • Participating in utilization review activities including but not limited to development of standards, insurance company appeals and teleconferences and provision of prior authorization information;
  • Participating in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Quality Assessment/Improvement (Q.A.I) and peer review standards;
  • Provide in a timely manner all related information as requested and needed for medical staff and insurance credentialing and Human Resources employment processes.
