Work Schedule: 36/48 hour rotations

Shift: Nights

Assignment Duration: 13 weeks

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience in correctional healthcare is mandatory.

The Correctional Registered Nurse collaborates with healthcare professionals, correctional staff, and administrative personnel to ensure the health and safety of the incarcerated individuals. This role requires the RN to navigate the unique challenges of the correctional environment while delivering both routine and emergency medical care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employ the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Conduct focused interviews to determine specific patient needs.
  • Identify physiological and psychosocial changes in patients' conditions.
  • Perform health assessments on newly admitted inmates.
  • Refer inmates to appropriate medical professionals when necessary.
  • Assess the need for emergency medical care and ensure medication administration follows established protocols.
  • Gather, analyze, and document data from healthcare team members, noting nursing diagnoses.
  • Develop and document patient care plans based on identified nursing diagnoses and expected outcomes.
  • Prioritize actions based on patient care needs.
  • Monitor the alignment between patient care plans and medical staff actions.
  • Implement interventions according to established priorities and hospital policies.
  • Initiate and assess patient education efforts.
  • Revise care plans based on evaluations and changes in medical directives.
  • Document patient responses to nursing interventions.
  • Supervise and guide other healthcare staff, including LPNs and CNAs.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Registered Nurse License in the practicing state.
  • At least one year of experience in correctional healthcare preferred.
  • Adherence to relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Completion of competency programs as applicable.
  • Current CPR certification, if required.
  • TB screening or chest x-ray, if applicable.
  • Health certificate as per contract or state regulations.
  • Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as required.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in computer usage.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
