Reports To: Gardens Maintenance Manager
The Descanso Railroad Technician plays a vital role in the upkeep, maintenance, and educational outreach of the mechanical components within the model train garden at Descanso Gardens. This position demands a high level of public interaction, mechanical skills, and meticulous attention to detail. The technician will adhere to a strict schedule for setup, maintenance, and preparation to ensure seamless operation throughout the day. Proficiency in working from heights and handling delicate machinery is essential.
As a full-time, on-site technician, the individual will also serve as a representative of the Gardens, engaging with visitors and providing insights about the train garden. The role requires someone who can effectively communicate with both adults and children, particularly during peak visitation times. Weekend and holiday work is a requirement.
Job Classification: This is a full-time non-exempt role, necessitating availability on weekends, holidays, and potentially evenings based on organizational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance of model train tracks, including debris removal and ensuring cleanliness. Light sanding and cleaning with appropriate solutions may be necessary, requiring work from ladders and navigating complex garden layouts.
- Perform maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on model trains, including regular lubrication, wheel cleaning, and wear inspections.
- Address and resolve issues related to derailed trains, including identifying and correcting underlying causes.
- Regularly inspect wheels, contact feet, axles, and couplers for functionality.
- Manage daily engine switching to prevent overheating.
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the hardscape within the Descanso Railroad garden, including removing debris and maintaining the integrity of the platform.
- Provide knowledgeable responses to visitor inquiries regarding the installation, operation, and maintenance of the exhibit, as well as ticket sales and event information.
- Facilitate training for staff and volunteers on operational procedures related to the Descanso Railroad.
- Monitor model train operations and proactively identify opportunities for operational improvements.
- Assist in the installation of seasonal updates and new features within the model train garden.
- Regularly check for wildlife-related issues that may impact the garden.
- Respond appropriately to adverse weather conditions that could affect the train collection and garden infrastructure.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Adhere to safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with OSHA standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring tools and equipment are in optimal condition to prevent accidents.
- Follow the Code of Safe Practices to ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and volunteers, reporting any hazards as necessary.
Equipment Utilized: Ladders, dremel tools, blowers, hand tools, pressure washers, water hoses.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in operating model trains is preferred.
- Physical capability to perform various tasks requiring dexterity and strength.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with the public.

Compensation: Up to $19.50 per hour
