The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been a vital source of free resources, knowledge, and education for the community for over a century. NYPL is looking for a **Junior Custodial Staff** member to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for both library patrons and staff.
Location: Staten Island
Compensation: $33,599 - $38,639 / year
Department: Facilities
Employment Type: Full Time
Reporting To: John Fradella
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of the library building and surrounding areas.
- Perform floor maintenance including buffing, stripping, and waxing.
- Shampoo carpets as needed.
- Replace light bulbs and assist with basic maintenance tasks.
- Manage snow removal during winter months.
- Prepare maintenance reports and track inventory of cleaning supplies.
- Act swiftly to ensure safety during emergencies and report issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Regularly communicate with the Library Manager to assess branch needs.
- Travel between various library branches as assigned.
- May be required to work at different locations as necessary.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise:
- High School Diploma or GED with prior experience in custodial or building maintenance roles.
- Proven knowledge of standard cleaning practices, materials, and equipment used in commercial settings.
- Familiarity with safety procedures and material safety data sheets.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated reliability and adaptability.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including cleaning, heavy lifting, and working at heights.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Must successfully pass a physical examination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in mixing cleaning chemicals according to safety guidelines.
- Knowledge of operating commercial cleaning equipment.

Physical Duties:
This position requires moderate to extensive physical effort, including bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Travel to various library locations may be necessary.

Hours: 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends as required. Schedule may vary.
