Position Goal: To cultivate in each student an understanding of the significance of science in societal and economic advancement; to inspire each student to gain knowledge of scientific principles and facts, as well as skills in scientific problem-solving methodologies; to identify and nurture individual talents of students in scientific disciplines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties may be assigned.
The essential functions of this role encompass, but are not limited to, the following core responsibilities:
  1. Facilitates learning of skills, knowledge, and scientific mindsets through courses in general science, earth sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or scientific inquiries to secondary students, employing the curriculum adopted by the Board of Education along with other suitable educational activities.
  2. Guides students in civic responsibilities and fundamental subject matter as dictated by state law and the administrative regulations of the school district.
  3. Designs a comprehensive science program that includes demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student-led experiments; organizes laboratory experiences for optimal educational outcomes.
  4. Illustrates scientific concepts using scientific tools, experiments, and both standard and custom instructional materials.
  5. Offers individualized or small group instruction to tailor the curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students and to manage various projects and experiments concurrently.
  6. Instructs on the proper use, maintenance, and safe handling of chemicals, scientific instruments, and biological specimens.
  7. Ensures safe storage and appropriate usage of materials, equipment, and tools. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as necessary.
  8. Establishes and upholds standards of student conduct to foster a productive learning atmosphere during class, laboratory sessions, and field excursions.
  9. Assesses each student's progress and understanding, skills, and scientific attitudes in the courses being taught.
  10. Selects and requests educational materials, instructional aids, scientific equipment, chemicals, and supplies, maintaining inventory records as required.
  11. Maintains professional growth through participation in in-service education activities provided by the District and self-directed professional development opportunities.
  12. Identifies student needs and collaborates with other educational professionals to assist students in overcoming health, attitude, and learning challenges.
  13. Engages in curriculum development and other educational initiatives.
  14. Assists students in selecting and developing individual research endeavors.
  15. Collaborates with school administration to provide science exhibitions and programs for the school and community, and in sponsoring science-related activities.
  16. Communicates with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
  17. Supervises students during extracurricular activities throughout the assigned workday.
  18. Participates in faculty committees and supports student activities.
  19. Works cooperatively with the principal or designated representative to establish the evaluation method in accordance with district guidelines.
  20. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee. This job description does not represent an exhaustive list of responsibilities, and management may revise it at any time.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's or Master's Degree

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Pennsylvania Instructional Teaching Certificate LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  1. Ability to communicate clearly and distinctly.
  2. Ability to compose routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  1. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  2. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  3. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and to interpret bar graphs.
  4. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations.
  5. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk and communicate effectively. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee may occasionally need to use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Some driving may be necessary; light lifting - up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines under significant time constraints.

The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet but may become moderate to loud at times.
