Cytogenetics Technologist Trainee Job Summary

LabCorp is seeking a highly skilled Cytogenetics Technologist Trainee to join its team in a dynamic laboratory environment. This position will be working for our Women's Health and Genetics division, where you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of scientific techniques, including specimen culturing, slide preparation, and chromosome analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform culture initiation, harvesting of cells, staining slides from various tissue types
  • Perform analysis of chromosomes, which includes imaging and karyotyping of cytogenetic specimens
  • Summarize test results utilizing ISCN nomenclature
  • Perform FISH and aneuploidy testing
  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Review test requisitions to gather pertinent details for analysis
  • Distinguish between normal and abnormal test results
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment

Requirements:

  • B.A./B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, Cytogenetics Technology or relatable life science
  • Previous relevant laboratory experience preferred
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems are a plus
  • High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
