Denton, Texas, United States Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services Full time
Job Overview:

Senior Medical Practitioner

Join a dedicated team where we prioritize the well-being and respect of those we serve, and embrace the belief that every individual can achieve enhanced wellness and independence.

Our state-supported living facilities cater to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who may also face medical fragility or behavioral challenges.

These facilities deliver comprehensive, campus-based services across multiple locations statewide.
The state of Texas provides numerous advantages to its employees.

HHSC qualifies for the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which alleviates the remaining balance on federal student loans after meeting specific payment criteria.

We also offer exceptional health benefits, a lifetime monthly retirement annuity, and participation in the Employees Retirement System of Texas.

If you seek a fulfilling career with purpose, this position is ideal for you.

The Staff Physician at the State Supported Living Center (SSLC) engages in advanced medical practices, ensuring the provision of high-quality, integrated medical services to individuals with intellectual disabilities served by HHSC.

Responsibilities include diagnosing and treating individuals with complex medical, psychiatric, and behavioral health needs. You will develop and oversee healthcare plans with measurable goals and interventions, ensuring their effective implementation.

Participate in treatment team discussions, advocate for the medical needs of individuals, and collaborate with families, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), Physician Assistants (PAs), and community medical providers.

Provide guidance to the treatment team to address intricate medical issues affecting individual health and well-being. Complete necessary reports and medical documentation, identifying trends or issues and proposing solutions. Provide care for HHSC employees injured during work-related activities.

Engage with other medical services department members to ensure compliance with the Department of Justice (DOJ) Settlement Agreement.

Share on-call responsibilities with other qualified medical personnel.

Work under the limited supervision of the Medical Director of the SSLC, exercising considerable initiative and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:
Regular attendance is required, with potential for specific shift assignments, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime as per agency leave policies.

Deliver and oversee high-quality medical services to individuals with intellectual disabilities in accordance with accepted medical practices.

Diagnose and treat individuals with complex medical, psychiatric, and behavioral health needs. Guide the treatment team in medical matters and ensure the proper implementation of healthcare plans. Monitor health trends and adjust treatment strategies as necessary. Ensure the integration of medical treatment and oversee the long-term health status of individuals.

Provide chronic care, including quarterly assessments for individuals with chronic health conditions, reviewing appropriate treatments, and adjusting medical care as needed.

Write prescriptions and conduct medication reviews within the scope of your licensing credentials and expertise.

Report significant trends or issues to supervisors and suggest actions based on your professional judgment.

Refer or perform specialized medical treatments and procedures, coordinating with specialty clinics to ensure comprehensive care. Oversee the daily health and well-being of individuals.

Provide acute care, including daily assessments for health issues or injuries in the clinic and/or infirmary, and supervise medical services provided by other staff such as APRNs, PAs, RNs, and LVNs.

Conduct daily sick call clinics for assigned units, evaluating illnesses, injuries, and cases of abuse/neglect. Direct nurses in providing treatments during sick calls as necessary. Perform required treatments and prescribe medications when appropriate. Participate in interdisciplinary planning conferences and personal support team meetings for residents at the State Supported Living Center, providing medical information to parents/guardians as needed.

Review treatment plans at the Individual Service Plan (ISP) meetings, assessing the effectiveness and progress of patient care, and making necessary adjustments.

Provide guidance to the treatment team to resolve complex medical issues affecting individuals' health and well-being.

Ensure accurate and timely documentation, including annual summaries, pre-procedural histories, and all patient care records.

Prepare annual medical reports for residents, including comprehensive assessments and yearly objectives. Monitor medical trends for individual patients and the SSLC as a whole, providing leadership to address deficiencies. Consult with the admitting physician at local hospitals when necessary, reviewing documentation for individuals returning from hospitalization to ensure continuity of care.

Collaborate with medical services department members to achieve full compliance with the DOJ Settlement Agreement.

Assist in identifying trends and issues.

Contribute to improvement plans for SSLC medical services, including policy enhancements, new treatment modalities, and the need for advanced equipment.

Provide care for HHS employees injured during work-related activities when necessary.

Additional duties may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift assignments.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient understanding of general medicine methods and procedures, including the development, implementation, and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans.
Familiarity with medical jurisprudence.
Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, ICF-IID standards, certification requirements for the Council on Quality and Leadership, HHSC policies and procedures, and the DOJ Settlement Agreement.

Competence in patient care and the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment.

Experience in medical practice.

Ability to maintain the well-being of individuals both on campus and during hospitalization.

Capability to respond to medical emergencies on campus as needed and when on-call.

Strong communication skills with nurses, direct care staff, and interdisciplinary team members.

Effective oral and written communication abilities, fostering collaboration with individuals, employees, peers, family members, and medical/non-medical professionals in the community.

Ability to evaluate patients and implement effective treatment plans in coordination with interdisciplinary personnel.

Commitment to maintaining required continuing medical education hours.
