Job Summary

This role serves as the Airborne Fire Management Specialist, overseeing fire suppression aviation resources. The primary objective is to ensure program readiness, response, and coordination with multiple agencies in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner consistent with state and federal protocols.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage the aviation program, including direct supervision of employees, record-keeping, and approval of payroll, travel, and purchasing.
  • Identify and assess facilities statewide for program needs, staying up-to-date on policy and guideline changes impacting the state aviation program.
  • Create and deliver training on aviation usage in wildland fires, proper deployment and tactical usage of aircraft, and protective equipment.
  • Manage contracts for Aviation assets, procurement, storage, and disposal of fire retardant and suppressant materials, as well as agreements for use of facilities as aviation bases.
  • Coordinate with interagency partners at all levels of government, military flight controllers, and coordinate airspace deconfliction in wildland fires and military operational areas.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of initial attack and extended attack fire suppression operations, interagency ordering and usage of Aircraft, and cost reporting for Aircraft.
  • Skills in effectively planning and managing aviation operations, coordinating with airport managers, Federal agency personnel, and FAA staff.
  • Ability to create a safety-focused program, foster trust and cooperation, delegate appropriately, and anticipate needs of base and contractor personnel.
Working Conditions

This position requires working long hours and weekends as needed, driving on State business, and maintaining a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Salary and Benefits

The estimated annual salary range for this position is $80,000-$110,000, depending on experience. The State of Arizona provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, life, and short-term disability insurance, top-ranked retirement plans, paid holidays, vacation time, sick leave, deferred compensation, wellness plans, and tuition reimbursement eligibility after one year of employment.
